Journaling is such a powerful tool that can help you gain clarity, reduce stress and enhance self-awareness. I remember I tried to journal when I was feeling anxious so that I could figure out what exactly caused my anxiety because at that time I had NO IDEA what my trigger was for being anxious and that was frustrating as I love fixing problems. I’m a problem fixer okay! (control freak I know). So, whether you’re new to journaling or looking to rekindle your writing practice, this blog post will guide you through getting started. Let’s dive in!
Why should you start journaling?
Journaling has many benefits for your mental and emotional well-being. Research has shown that regular journaling can reduce anxiety and depression, improve problem-solving skills, and boost creativity (my research haha). It provides a safe space to express your thoughts and emotions without judgment.
Set an intention
Before you begin, take a moment to set an intention for your journaling practice. Ask yourself why you want to journal. Whether it’s for stress relief, personal growth, or simply to capture memories, having a clear intention will give your journaling a sense of purpose and direction.
Choose the right journal
When starting your journaling journey, it’s important to choose a journal that resonates with you. Consider factors such as size, paper quality, and binding. Some people prefer a small pocket-sized journal they can carry everywhere, while others enjoy the spaciousness of a larger notebook. Find what works best for you. I had sparkles and ribbons, this made me so happy 🙂
Set aside dedicated time
Make journaling a part of your daily routine by setting aside dedicated time. It could be in the morning to reflect on the day ahead or in the evening to unwind and process your thoughts. Consistency is key, so aim for at least 10-15 minutes of uninterrupted writing time. I normally would journal when my husband is out. I love the quiet, it helps me think better but remember this is your journey. Do what you are comfortable with.
Find your writing style
There are no rules when it comes to journaling. You can write in full sentences, bullet points, or even draw sketches. Experiment with different styles and see what feels most natural to you. Some people find it helpful to start with a prompt or a specific topic, while others prefer to let their thoughts flow freely. I had no idea I had so many emotions and thoughts once I started journaling. I wish I started sooner! You can start with my journal template. It has prompt questions which will make your start so much easier.
Write without judgment
Journaling is a private and personal practice, so you don’t need to be hard on yourself. We all make mistakes – it’s life, right? Every day is a lesson. Remember that there is no right or wrong way to journal. Allow yourself to write without judgment or self-censorship. Embrace the freedom to express your thoughts, feelings, and ideas authentically. Your journal is a safe space for self-reflection and growth.
Reflect and review
Periodically review your journal entries to gain insights and track your progress. Look for patterns, recurring themes, and moments of growth. Reflecting on your past entries can provide valuable self-awareness and help you identify areas of your life that may need attention or improvement. I like looking back on what I wrote a year ago, I feel so proud of how strong I became. It still gives me hope that life is only as you make it.
Experiment with different techniques
Journaling is a versatile practice and there are various techniques you can explore. Some popular ones include gratitude journaling, where you write down things you’re grateful for, and stream-of-consciousness writing, where you let your thoughts flow without interruption. Try different techniques to discover what resonates with you. I have included a list below of different techniques and questions you can ask yourself to start journaling.
Stay committed
Like any habit, journaling requires consistency and commitment. Make it a priority in your life and hold yourself accountable. If you miss a day or two, don’t beat yourself up, it’s okay!! Pick up where you left off and continue the practice. Remember, journaling is a journey and every entry counts.
